During the month of January, as part of our outreach work in detention, a group of JRS team members started a new programme in detention called B.E.S.T. - Building Empowerment Skills Together. The aim of this programme is to help those who are still in detention to cope better with the challenges they face in detention and with those they will face once they are released by providing them with empowerment skills. To this end, the programme adopts a multi-disciplinary approach:

Themes like suffering, hope and forgiveness are tackled from a psychological and spiritual dimension. To facilitate the discussion, every week the asylum seekers in detention are being shown a film which can be linked to one of these themes. Secondly, participants are also empowered by discussing topics such as human rights and other justice issues. Finally they will be invited to express themselves through art, poetry, prose and other creative means, thus enabling everyone to hear their “voices” from detention. Vyacheslav Okun sj, Fr. Dieudonne’ Mampasi sj, Dr. Julian Caruana and Dr. Alexia Rossi are coordinating this innovative programme.
