Rector's Message for Scholastic Year 2013 - 2014

Dear students, parents and members of staff,

Welcome to the 2013-2014 academic year!

I hope you had a peaceful and restful summer and that you are looking forward to another fruitful academic year. A special word of welcome goes to the new students admitted to the Pre-Prep and Prep 1 classes in our Primary School, students admitted by ballot into Form 1 and first year Sixth Formers.

This academic year brings new faces to the administration teams: Ms. Daniela Camilleri Sacco has been approved by the College Board as Head of our Primary School in Balzan and Ms Annelise Attard has been approved as Assistant Head for student affairs at our Sixth Form. Moreover, I have appointed Mr Stanley Bezzina as prefect in our Primary School. I congratulate the three of them and promise them my full support in accomplishing their mission at College.

Summer at St Aloysius College was very busy indeed. Old ceilings/floors were replaced in the secondary school. Apart from this, some structures were demolished to ensure there are proper safety exits and almost all the secondary school was redecorated. Similar works were carried out at the primary school to make sure the school is more accessible to students of different abilities. A new common online management system is being installed for the three schools which we hope will facilitate our communication with all of you.

During the past eight months elected members of the three schools’ staff worked hard on the vision statement for St Aloysius College. There was wide consultation especially among members of staff to finalise it and I am pleased to inform you that the College Board approved the final version at it’s September meeting. Each school will now work to write its own mission statement.

Moreover, we have been working on one visual identity of the three schools. St Aloysius College now has a new logo and students starting Pre-Prep and Year One share the same uniform as the Secondary school boys. The name of the Primary School is no longer Stella Maris but St Aloysius Primary School.

During the month of September, members of the three management teams attended a three-day seminar on instructional supervision at the Dolmen Hotel led by Professor Robert J. Starratt of Boston College. The three schools are embarking on a renewal programme that will improve the quality of teaching and learning given to all students of all abilities.

I wish you all the very best for this academic year.

Let us trust in the Lord’s providence and care for all of us as we continue our mission with generosity and joy.

With best regards,

Jimmy Bartolo sj
