Chapel renovation completed

The newly refurbished chapel at Dar Manwel Magri SJ

This year the Jesuit Residence 'Dar P. Manwel Magri', situated next door the the University of Malta, is celebrating its 40th Year of existence.

The  idea of looking for a small piece of land for a possible Jesuit community in the vicinity of the then newly built University struck Fr Maurice Eminyan’s mind shortly before he finished his term as Provincial. It then took Fr Arthur G. Vella, his successor,  quite a time looking for a suitable place before a very small field with a dilapidated room in its centre was at last  providentially spotted next to the University’s gate.

The House was built in 1971 and was officially opened by Fr Salvino Darmanin, then Provincial, on 1st December, 1972, Feast of the English Martyr, with the purpose of being “an oasis of spiritual Christian presence in a secular University”. The first members were Fr Mario and Fr Victor, the Jaccarini brothers, Fr Charles Delia and Fr Arthur G. Vella.

A simple commemoration will be held at Dar Manwel Magri on 10th December at 6.30 pm. Fr Provincial Paul Pace will lead a concelebrated Eucharist in thanksgiving for these years of spiritual ministry by the community.

On this occasion the newly refurbished community chapel will be inaugurated by Fr Provincial. Benefactors, workers and those who have contributed towards this refurbishment are being invited, as well as House Superiors, past DMM Superiors and Chaplains and Jesuits from our communities.

We would like to extend warm thanks to all those who contributed towards this project, and without whose help and generosity it would not have been possible.
