Lenten Reflections at University Chapel

The University Chaplaincy invites you to a series of three Lenten reflections with the theme 'Approaching Easter in troubled times', on Monday 2nd April, Tuesday 3rd April and Wednesday 4th April at 8.00pm.

The talks will be delivered by Jim Corkery SJ, Irish Jesuit theologian and educator.

More about Jim Corkery SJ:

Jim Corkery was born in 1954 in Limerick, Ireland.  Educated first by the Salesian Sisters and then by the Jesuits, he joined the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus in Dublin in 1972.  Subsequently, he studied social sciences at University College, Dublin, philosophy at the Jesuit faculty in Munich, Germany, and theology at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin. 

Following ordination to the priesthood in 1984, he attended The Catholic University of America in Washington DC, completing a licentiate in 1986 and a doctorate in 1991, both in the field of systematic theology.  For the former, he wrote his dissertation on the theology of grace of Leonardo Boff; for the latter, he wrote his dissertation on the relationship between human existence and Christian salvation in the theology of Joseph Ratzinger.  For the past twenty years he has been lecturing in the Department of Systematic Theology and History at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin, where he is currently Associate Professor of Systematic Theology. 
In 2009, he published Joseph Ratzinger’s Theological Ideas: Wise Cautions and Legitimate Hopes (Paulist Press).  In 2010, together with Professor Thomas Worcester SJ of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, he co-edited a collection of essays entitled The Papacy Since 1500: From Italian Prince to Universal Pastor (Cambridge University Press). He has written many articles and book chapters in the areas of theological anthropology, spirituality and culture, social spirituality and faith and justice.
In his own Irish Province of the Jesuits, he has served twice as local superior and also twice as Consultor of the Province.  He was a delegate to the 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, which took place in Rome from January to March 2008.
