Reaching for the Stars

JRS Malta Football Team

JRS Stars, the football team of Jesuit Refugee Service Malta, has concluded its first season of training. The team has achieved a series of positive results in friendly matches played against a number of football teams.

The idea of a football team is the brainchild of Jarosław Mikuczewski (standing, right), a Polish Jesuit on a two-year placement with JRS Malta. Beginning as a small initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle for migrants and integration through sport, the football team now has 47 footballers of different nationalities on its list. The migrant football players come from different countries spanning Africa from East to West, and meet for training twice a week.

Mr Renzo Kerr Cumbo (standing, left) is the coach, while Mr Ali Ibrahim (standing, second left), himself a former football player, played an active role in launching and promoting this football initiative and is a point of reference among other migrants.

JRS Malta is deeply grateful to St Aloysius College, Birkirkara, which graciously hosts the training sessions. Sponsorships for appropriate further development and training are welcome. Please contact us for further information.
