Tragic Loss of Life in the Mediterranean

About 150 refugees seeking to flee from Libya are estimated to have lost their lives when a 13-metre boat packed with some 200 people capsized last night in rough seas approximately 40 nautical miles south of the Italian island of Lampedusa and 101 nautical miles southwest of Malta. 49 survivors have been rescued.

The occupants of the boat were said to be mainly Eritreans and Somalis who had left from the port of Zuweirah, close to Tripoli. JRS Malta offers its condolences to the families of all those who died in this tragic incident as sub-Saharan African refugees trapped in Libya continue to try to make their way out of the troubled country in search of safety elsewhere.
