Young people and Jesuits celebrate 10 years of voluntary work together

InYgo-Malta Foundation, a network of Jesuits and young people in Ignatian youth ministry are this year celebrating 10 years of voluntary work carried out by Maltese youths in nine countries all over the world. Ignatian youth ministry is founded on the firm principle that one’s relationship with God needs to be translated into action, action for justice in the world and solidarity with the poorest of the poor.

This year about 60 University students and young professionals will be helping to organize summer schools for underprivileged children in Catania, Naples and Bari in Italy with the Missionaries of Charity.  28 young volunteers from Jesuit-run St. Aloysius’ College will be setting off  on a similar experience to Armagh, in Northern Ireland. The University Chaplain, Fr. Michael Bugeja sj and twelve other volunteers will be accompanying the sick and the dying in a Home run by the Missionaries of Charity in Ethiopia. Another 60 volunteers will be committed to voluntary work here in Malta, in Zejtun with the Paulo Freire Institute (a Jesuit apostolate offering literacy classes to children and adults as well as social support services) as well as through the Young Christian Life Communities in Qawra.

The volunteers, who follow an intense programme of formation and craft preparation join together to raise funds for the projects and the poor people they work with in these summer experiences. inYgo-Malta would like to thank all those Companies, individuals and the general public for supporting these voluntary work projects through their donations. If anyone would like to donate to these funds for the poor, they can deposit on the bank accounts: inYgo Voluntary Work Fund. BOV: 40015104618; HSBC: 008033763050

More than 500 young people in 10 years have joined inYgo-Malta’s short-term and long-term experiences helping the poor, sick, dying and disadvantaged people. It is indeed apt for inYgo-Malta to be celebrating such an anniversary in the European Year of Volunteering.
