Libya Unrest

Civilian and military aircraft as well as passenger ferries and other vessels have reached Malta in the past three days carrying evacuees from Libya. National and international media have given substantial coverage to efforts to bring thousands of foreign nationals working in Libya out of  the country as the popular uprising gathers momentum.

JRS Malta is deeply concerned about the rapidly deteriorating situation and the reported perils encountered by those, including Libyans, seeking to flee to safety. Little is known about the fate of possibly thousands of sub-Saharan African migrants including asylum seekers who were unable to access protection in Libya and thus constitute a category of special concern.

No arrivals of small boats carrying refugees out of Libya have been reported in Malta so far. Current sea and weather conditions around Malta make such attempted crossings highly unlikely and extremely dangerous.
